movie talk
Aug. 7th, 2013 09:36 amThere's a new Thor 2 trailer. Seems to be the one they screened at comicon. SCREAMS, CRIES, HYPERVENTILATES, ETC. If you weren't aware just how fucking excited I was for Thor 2 that is a bit of a hint. lol.
Speaking of movies, I watched Oblivion last night, and uh..
I give it a 2/5 stars.
IT WAS AWFUL.
I mean, the effects were fabulous. I liked the world because yayyy post apocalypse. It had perfect pacing, great action scenes, and the soundtrack is AMAZING but I knew that already because I've been listening to the soundtrack for months before even seeing the movie. That's where the 2 stars come from.
But holy shit was it predictable! I had 80% of the plot sussed out in the first 10 minutes. And I'm NOT GOOD at figuring out where plots are gonna go, usually! This was just the single most predictable movie I've ever seen in my life. And I think it's because, while expertly assembled, Oblivion was really nothing more than bits from other movies shoved together. While watching the movie, so many different parts just were obviously lifted from other movies. I am Legend, Star Wars, Moon, The Matrix, Independence Day, 2001: Space Odyssey. I mean it was SO OBVIOUS.
And it wouldn't bother me - lifting things from other movies is par for the course and sometimes can work just fine - except the movie didn't do anything new with these moments. Action sequences, plot elements, whatever. It didn't put its own flavor on them. Oblivion actually felt (ironically? not ironically?) as if some sort of computer AI analyzed a list of "best scifi movies" or something, and then selected a bunch of story ideas and visual elements and pasted them all together and said yes, surely this approximates a human-made movie and will do well at the box office.
On fucking top of it all, like, none of the characters had a personality. They were just archetypes. And annoying ones, at that. I felt worst for Victoria. Why was Victoria treated so badly? Why was her character such an obvious throwaway? When Jack gave her the little tin with the flower in it and she immediately chucked it out the window, I knew instantly - she's dead. Because they want to give the audience reason to not be sad when she dies, a reason to prefer Jack's perfect sleeping beauty from space despite knowing fucking nothing about her except how pretty she looks in Jack's sepia-toned memories. God foRBID THERE BE ANY EMOTIONAL COMPLEXITY? Don't even get me started on Jack. YAWNnnnnnn. Insert the non-white spiritual/emotional leader, the stalwart right-hand man who doesn't trust the interloper at first but eventually does, the fucking kid at the end (rollin mah eyes). I can't with any of this predictable damn movie.
I'm being hard on Oblivion because I expect more from scifi movies. We don't get many. Like, 2 a year. So when one of those ends up being a haphazard melange of assorted other, better movies from the past, with no character depth or complexity to save it at all, it just disappoints the fuck out of me.
THANKS FOR NOTHING OBLIVION
