1. Favourite Game of the Series
So hard, soooo so hard to choose one of the three. For starters because I feel like you can't have any of the games without the others (except the first one, perhaps, because although the story is left open, the game itself has its own arc which is complete by the end so you could probably stop there and be ok with it) since it is a trilogy.

The first game is really great. The story is dense, a real crash course in this new universe, and that in itself is an incredibly fun experience. ME1 has its downsides too though, with some repetitive gameplay (so many of the bases on the planets are basically the same mission over and over, and even the bases themselves look very similar) and also the combat in me1 was incredibly confusing to me at first. (I actually never really fully understood the HUD during my first playthrough and basically just stuck to the guns.) ME1 is the most rpg-game-ish of them all, with (imo) too much emphasis on upgrading guns and armor and such. A bit much for me to handle. I don't like micromanaging my stats that way. But the story is just.. SO GOOD. I was hit right in the feels with it. I just set combat to 'casual' mode and played for the story.

ME2 improved on the combat system and guns/armor/micromanaging issues of ME1 a lot. ME2 was just straight up fun to play and I figured out the combat system extremely quickly. The story is just as good as the first one, but diverges a bit into sort of a side story due to being involved with Cerberus. Several of the characters from the first one aren't in the second one, or they appear only briefly. It is still something that confuses me a bit.. I'm not sure why they went that route instead of just bringing (at least most of) the gang back together. Don't get me wrong, ME2 is a very important part of the trilogy and has a lot of really fun gameplay. And there are some new characters introduced in ME2 I fell in love with and am happy they became part of the story. But it's my least favorite of the three due to the divergent story.

Overall I have to go with Mass Effect 3 as my favorite. Which makes a fair amount of sense, I think, because by the third one they'd polished everything pretty well. They revisited so many previous characters and dangling storylines, so much of the story is addressed and wrapped up. And the whole thing is a heart-wrenching goodbye to the characters you've grown to love in the first two. The gameplay itself is the least repetitive and most fun of all of the games, with some incredibly varied missions, and everything's been simplified to really focus on the story. (Some people were bothered by that, but I liked it. Seriously, by the 800th "terminal hacking" in ME1 and ME2 I get it, I get the thing you were going for and I just don't want to do it anymore. lol.) The rub of the thing is, you really can't play ME3 without doing the other two first. I've read accounts from people who played ME3 without playing the other two, then went back and played the other two then ME3 again - and it's a completely different experience. Being able to carry over your character, decisions, and relationships just makes too huge of an impact. And it's also partly that baggage you bring with you to ME3 that makes it so satisfying and so fun a game.
