Last night I reorganized all my bookshelves! I typed all this up for [community profile] adulting so I might as well share it here too.

Sorry in advance for the haphazard melange of before pictures. I didn't think to take real befores and afters. So I just searched through some old photos instead. I'm the worst!

bookshelf 1:

before:

Books piled on top of each other. The two top right cubby shelves hold dishes that were just stacked and not displayed nicely. The the two bottom right cubbies hold notebooks and binders and things and crap was always falling everywhere. The two green boxes hold all my yarn, and the cats constantly got in there and pulled out my yarn and got hair on everything.

after:

Bottom right shelves neatened, more stuff put in there from other shelves to consolidate that stuff (notebooks, some important papers, etc). I made the entire bottom row of books to include all reference books, cook books, that sort of thing. I moved my yarn boxes up so the cats can't get in there anymore. :P Arranged the dishes and things a bit nicer so they're more on display! The only real BOOK books I have on this bookshelf now are my comic book trades right above my row of comic book boxes, and all my World War II historical books (top, second from right) which is also where I keep my college degree & tassel.

I also neatened up the top. Before:

All the candles lived up here, including some totally-burnt-down-ones that really needed to be tossed. Knick knacks just sorta rolled around.

after:

Ok not a huge difference but I moved all the candles (except for the one currently burning, mmm pine scent), I put the knick knacks (pieces of rock/wood from travels) into a basket to hold them in one place, and I dusted and cleaned up there so it's nice. :D

bookshelf 2:

before:

Sorry, I don't really have a good before photo of this bookshelf (wayyy off to the right of this picture, lol). I suspect it's because I was always especially ashamed of this bookshelf. You can just sort of see how awfully everything was piled in there.

after:

mmmm so orderly. The top shelf is all non-fiction. Some of those books are terrible (I inherited many of them from various sources) and I'll never read them so I kind of want to donate a bunch to the thrift store, but I don't have the energy in me right now for it. Maybe next month. :D The next two shelves are all my historical non-fiction and historical fiction books. The bottom two shelves are all my board games, which are nicely consolidated into two shelves now after donating a bunch last month. Down there is the perfect spot because the couches kind of hide those shelves and also we don't play games that much so we don't need to get into those shelves a lot.

bookshelf 3:

before:

This is a much older photo from before I donated a bunch of our board games. They took up 3 shelves! (And there were other games elsewhere in the house, not shown in this photo.) This shelf wasn't that terribly messy, though we use the top shelf as a catch-all for our crap when we walk in the door and I really need to organize it. But I need to get some supplies first (like a mail sorter).

after:

Yeah I left the crap in the top shelf. My one weakness in this whole endeavor, haha. If I cleaned it up it'd get messy again in a week so I'm just going to wait until I can get some stuff to organize everything up there. But the rest is nice organized boooooooks. Top row of books is all my "classic" scifi books. Heinlein, Asimov, short scifi story anthologies, as well as some more modern scifi books I deem of high enough quality to share the shelf, haha. Second row: Stephen King shelf. Also our brand new cable modem & router, because our old ones finally bit the dust.. after 10 years. I guess we got our money's worth. Third shelf: Star Wars books shelf. I do indeed have enough Star Wars books to give them their own shelf, and I'm not sorry. Bottom shelf: general other fantasy and scifi.

For funsies, an ACTION SHOT from in the middle of the whole horrible process last night:

And because my living room is so nice and clean now (I VACUUMED AND EVERYTHING) here's some overview photos of my whole living room :D

bonus pictures:

Chris got a set of fun lenses for use with cell phones and so I wanted to play with the fish eye lens. XD

IT'S NOT MUCH BUT IT'S MINE. I know I'm always super curious what people's houses look like so I'm just going to assume everyone else is the same way. My place is about 800~ square feet. It's not bad. I get a little cramped in here sometimes but then I just clean stuff out and I feel better again. My one complaint is, I wish there wasn't that wall between the living room and the kitchen. That would open things up so much.. ah well.

That office chair there is really ugly. Chris won't let me throw it away until I replace it with a real chair. The chair I want is super affordable but we just had to spend $300 on passports and $200 on a new cable modem and router and we were basically spending next month's money on some of that, so.. it's gonna be a while before I can afford to buy a chair haha.

Tadaaa.. this is where I work all day! Haha. The bedroom is so plain. I've decorated the wall above my computer, the part in my field of vision, lol, but otherwise I haven't had many ideas in here. Thank god for the brick at least!

I usually have a very pretty blue and white patterned throw on my bed but it's too cold at night now so I needed to pull out the quilt. I don't like the blah brown quilt but it was cheap from Walmart and it's actually REALLY warm and cozy. And it's totally the same quilt Scott McCall has. So I deal with it.

You are my living space-spiration and I may shamelessly rip off your idea for the pretty box front decoration setup and do something similar when I finally get off my ass and organize/box my comics. I do not apologize.

Pretty! I really like your bookcases; I have two and they're both a mess, so this whole post has inspired me. I've also been reading a lot of Unfuck Your Habitat lately, so I'm sort of on a cleaning binge. I definitely need to take some pictures, for sure.

That fish angle lens is ballin'.

gosh i love arrows.

also watching tv, making icons, writing fic, reading comics, and generally fanning it up.
