terminator genisys

naushikaLast night I watched Terminator Genisys. And I really, really enjoyed it!
I can understand the criticism I read for the movie and would agree with some of it. The story could have used a bit more depth. I also personally wished there had been more character moments. But I loved what there was. I think it was a really enjoyable AU (basically) of the original Terminator story. It was definitely a love letter to the first two films (which I fucking love).
Another criticism I saw was that the story was convoluted but I don't think so. I think if you're used to time travel stories then it makes sense. But I also am very familiar with the entire Terminator story as I've seen the first two films + TSCC innumerable times.. and Genisys was very true to the original story so it all made sense to me. It actually slotted right in to the events of T1 + T2 because this is a future where the events of T2 still happened.. I loved loved LOVE that Danny Dyson grew up to out-achieve his father's accomplishments.. but still reached the same unfortunate potential outcome.
Sarah Connor is my bae and I was most apprehensive about her portrayal but I was pleasantly surprised. I really liked her having been raised by the Terminator so now she no longer is a girl who needs saving, but a woman who can take care of herself. I do wish they'd played even more with the fate thing re: her and Kyle and having a baby together. There was some of that but that's a pretty heady thing for a girl to have grown up with (and you know Pops just told her about it matter of factly at a young age so she's spent her whole life grappling with this). But I liked that she grapples with it and pushes Kyle away and at the end of the movie it's not even this "she's definitely in love with him" thing. (But of course Kyle is in love with her. ALWAYS.)
Anyway I'm happy to report I really liked Emilia Clarke's portrayal. I mean, she's not my fave, but Lena Headey got to spend so much time with the character that it's basically impossible to compete with her. But she's a worthy addition and she gets to approach it from a totally different angle due to the AU background. So I'm happy.
I mean it's possible my love of the franchise is coloring my viewpoint of the movie. It's possible. Buuut I don't really care. I enjoyed the shit out of the movie and I'm happy to welcome it into the fold. :D
