fannish 50 - #1 - v from cyberpunk 2077
Feb. 9th, 2023 06:23 pmIt took me a lot of brainstorming, but I think I settled on a general theme for my Fannish Fifty. Fifty Fannish Video Game Things. I know.. very specific. I couldn't quite narrow it down to one topic I wanted to highlight fifty times - like, I could do favorite games, or favorite characters, or favorite pairings - but it all gets kind of repetitive and I also want to talk about ALL of those things! Hence, Fifty Fannish Video Game Things.
So without further ado, and easing myself into this commitment of talking about fifty different things, first I will highlight one of my favorite video game characters that I've played as:
V from Cyberpunk 2077

Now, since you can play the game however you want and choose your actions and dialog options (within certain parameters), and the role-playing aspect of it, a playable character like V will be a little different for everyone. I've played a few different Vs (since you can have different backgrounds), and my favorite is the ex-corpo. So she's smart and slick, but rough around the edges - just a little too rough for corpo life. For me, it puts an extra sense of importance on what she does throughout the game and fighting against the corpos, when she was one herself. But I really love the whole fighting-against-my-past type of trope.

Regardless of the options you choose, some things remain despite how you play your V - she is a badass. And she's funny. But there's also a really strong vulnerability that comes through, due to her circumstances. The chip in her head, containing the 'soul' of Johnny Silverhand, that's slowly killing her. It makes the whole mission important, and makes V want to make a difference. To prove something, before she dies.
"I just want the world to know I was here. That I mattered."
And it makes the relationship between her and Johnny very interesting and important (and probably something I will talk about in another entry!). Imagine never being apart from the person that's (unwittingly) killing you. You hate them, but end up growing close to them in a way you wouldn't with any other person. It's a neat twist for a game and lets you really take the character to interesting places.

(My V and Johnny, perpetually annoyed by her :D )
My V is an ex-corpo mercenary with a terrorist stuck in her brain and a filthy mouth. She's unique and different, and she's one of my all time favorite video game characters I've ever played. <3
