my fave songs of the 90s
Jul. 27th, 2013 11:53 pm
Hold on to your butts for a hell of a
Dust off your Delia*s catalogue, slap on a bracelet, and tune the dial to your fave FM station and let's do this..
Numbers 60 through 51...
60. Chumbawamba - Tubthumping
This song is basically a foregone conclusion, so it's first up. I have fond memories of singing this song at the top of my lungs with my friends. We were all so delighted to sing "pissing the night away" over and over. Because this was pre-internet and none of us knew that it meant DRINKING the night away. Most annoyingly repetitive ear-wormy song of the 90s? Maybe. But that doesn't mean it's not AWESOME.
59. Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories - Stay
Man, this song was my jammmmmm. I always had to stop what I was doing to watch the music video and sing along. Cause, you know, youtube wasn't around yet ahaha. Also Lisa Loeb had the coolest fucking glasses, I wanted a pair so bad.
58. 'N Sync - Tearin' Up My Heart
THIS LIST WOULDN'T BE COMPLETE WITHOUT A BOYBAND. (Actually there's one more boy band later on.. sort of.) Back in the ~day, you either liked 'N Sync or Backstreet Boys (unless you went the third party route and got on the 98 Degrees train), and I was totallllllly an 'N Sync girl. Come on. Justin Timberlake. He was always my fave, and he remains attractive to this day, so. I feel justified (heh).
This video tho, lolllll.
57. Deep Blue Something - Breakfast At Tiffany's
Saccharine sweet lyrics and dat strummy guitar. This is one of the most well-known 90s songs, for a reason. IT'S PLAIN TO SEE WE'RE OVER, AND I HATE WHEN THINGS ARE OVERRRRRR, BUT SO MUCH IS LEFT UNDONEEEEEEEE. So good.
56. Guns N' Roses - November Rain
This song is just straight up epic. Omg the change-up at the 7 minute mark and the guITAR. I'm not a huge metal fan but this is the coolest metal ballad of all time. ALL TIME. And it always makes me think of my middle school dances: my school held a dance at the YMCA every Friday night, and the last song of the night was always November Rain. It always instantly transports me back, haha.
55. Collective Soul - Shine
WHOAAAAAA HEAVEN LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE DOWNNNNNNNn. Ahh the guitar is so good, especially the guitar soloooooooo. (That's sort of a recurring theme here. A lot of 90s songs were super guitar heavy. And I love guitar.) This is just a solid song.
54. Fastball - The Way
Mmm, pop. This song was just so catchy. It was ridiculous. I went out and bought their cd and hated every other song. But I'll always love The Way. I'm also not missing the irony of nostalgia-ing over a song from a previous era which is nostalgia-ing over another previous musical era, haha. I love how you can always identify a music video from the 90s by the extreme color saturation and fish-eye lens, hah.
53. Van Halen - Right Now
I'm not gonna lie, about 93% of my love for this song is the video. This video is the reason I am accursed with the habit of occasionally wondering things like I WONDER HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE EATING A BANANA RIGHT NOW. Still a fabulous video. Also literally none of the things in the video aren't still relevant and accurate 20 years later.
52. The Wallflowers - One Headlight
Yahhhh, I was so attracted to Jakob Dylan. >____< He never quite achieved the level of fame as his dad, but this one-hit wonder is still fabulous. Another solid song.
51. Jill Sobule - I Kissed a Girl
A much, much better version of a song with this title imho. The Katy Perry version pretty much ripped off this song thematically (tho not musically), but twisted it to make it into something exploitative rather than a sad-but-sweet love song, which this song is.

"I Kissed A Girl" was the one song that was played by our campus radio station during lunch everyday during my Freshman year. Everyone was very "LOL lesbians" about it, and I remember thinking at the time, "Hm... I totally get this song."
"Right Now" has such an awesome video. I barely remember the song when I'm not listening to it, but that video is iconic.
THE WAY. No commentary. Just YES.
"Shine" has been in my head because Collective Soul played a concert here yesterday and the music has been on ads for the fair for at least a month now. This was not my favorite song of theirs, but I do love it. I mean... Dolly Parton covered this song. How badass is that?
"November Rain" - I just recently started listening to this song again. A lot. Because my sister had never heard it or seen the video and I was, like, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS EPICNESS. YOU MUST SEE/HEAR IT. I could listen to GnR instrumentals all day.
I love every song you picked here. I really do. Just so much goodness.

Date: 2013-07-28 11:35 am (UTC)I kissed a Girl - When the Katy Perry one came out, Jill Sobule came on record as saying "fuck you" about it.

Date: 2013-07-28 01:55 pm (UTC)Also pissing the night awaaaaaay. Pissing the night awaaaay. I so enjoyed singing that line. I think some of this stuff is a little before I got into my own thing music wise but I remember a lot of it. I liked BSB but I was NSYNC all the way. I liked 98 Degrees too cuz three of the four guys are from here and all four of them are from Ohio.
I feel you with the Fastball thing. I told someone I wanted The New Radicals cd. Turns out the only song I liked was the single they'd already released. Sad times.
I'm gonna go sing Tearin' Up My Heart now.

Date: 2013-07-29 09:07 pm (UTC)Yeah some of these songs skew kind of early 90s, so might not be as recognizable. But I like to mix it up.
That was a pretty big problem I seem to recall, that the rest of cds weren't as good as the one super big single. I think if that was the case, you ended up as a one-hit wonder. You have to be able to keep fans!

Date: 2013-07-28 04:17 pm (UTC)My high school girlfriend HATED Breakfast at Tiffany's, though. "So they like the same movie! WHO CARES? THAT DOESN'T CHANGE THE OTHER STUFF!" But she still sang along to the chorus. ;D

Date: 2013-07-29 09:10 pm (UTC)LOL. Sort of the 500 Days of Summer thing. JUST CAUSE YOU LIKE THE SAME MOVIE DOESN'T MEAN YOU'RE MEANT TO BE. But yeah it's catchy as hell. :D

Date: 2013-07-29 09:12 pm (UTC)And yeah, first jobs. I was a dishwasher at a home for mentally-disabled people. Good times. ::g:: I don't remember why exactly I chose that for my first music purchase. I really did like The Way and Out of My Head.

Date: 2013-07-29 09:15 pm (UTC)Ahhh, first jobs. My first job was a cashier at a touristy store across the street from my apartment, lol. Fastball was pretty huge when that single came out so I don't think any of us can be blamed for buying their cd. XD
