Part II... dun dun dun.
Numbers 50 through 41...
50. 4 Non Blondes - What's Up?
Oh man, this video is SO 90s, ahaha. I can't handle it. Fact about ~me: I had a big huge floppy top-hat sorta thing similar to the one lead singer Linda Perry is wearing. (Remember those?) Oh, fashion. ANYWAY, THE SONG. WHICH IS GREAT. The strummy guitar at first and then it ramps up, and the chorus is just crazyyyyy. And I try. OH MY GOD DO I TRYYYYYYy. Linda Perry is an amazing songwriter and a significant portion of the songs written in the past decade or so were written or co-written by her. Including just about every Christina Aguilera song ever. THE MORE YOU KNOW~
49. Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta
Remember what I said in the last part about saturated colors and fish eye? Heh. I loved this song cause the lyrics were just amazing to me. BEEN AROUND THE WORLD AND FOUND THAT ONLY STUPID PEOPLE ARE BREEDING, THE CRETINS CLONING AND FEEDING, AND I DON'T EVEN OWN A TV~~ Man what a fun song.
48. Sublime - Santeria
Sublime had a lot of great songs in the 90s, but Santeria was always my fave of theirs. Slow and moody, you can't help but groove to it.
47. Beck - Loser
Who doesn't love Beck? Nobody. NOBODY EVER. *PLUGS EARS* Thanks to this song, I knew exactly one sentence in Spanish in high school. SOY UN PERDEDOR. Great song for all the losers in school in the 90s, lol. Also Beck was basically my first introduction to sort of non-mainsteam styles of music, like electronic and hip hop, which is actually two styles of music I looooooove now. So I blame Beck for opening my mind to that.
46. Sophie B. Hawkins - Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover
Damnnnn I wish I was your loverrrrrr~~! Can't really argue with a line like that. Also filed under: songs that may or may not run through my head every time Daniel Sharman enters my field of view. Fun fact from Wikipedia: MTV deemed the original music video for the song too erotic and the video was banned from airing on the channel. Considering what gets aired on MTV today on Teen Wolf alone, that makes me laugh.
45. Stone Temple Pilots - Interstate Love Song
So much deliciously sraightforward rock in the 90s. What the hell is this video though? Lol. I don't even remember this. I think was a song I mostly just heard on the radio. I just love that bass on the song and low growly vocals.
44. The Pretenders - I'll Stand By You
The Pretenders' last hurrah in terms of mainstream success, this song is just a perfect melancholy power ballad. It's sad sounding, but the lyrics are sweet. One of those songs that's great to sing along to in the shower.
43. The Squirrel Nut Zippers - Hell
Remember that brief period in the 90s when swing/ska/rockabilly had that revival? OF COURSE YOU DO! The music that came out during this period sort of blew my mind, since I hadn't had any experience with those genres really. There's a slight uneasiness and creepiness that comes with a lot of music in this style, the sharps and flats of the notes, dressing up as devils, and the sultriness, that I love. Hell is one of the really great examples of this whole revival style. And the way the song was recorded makes it sound so authentic that I could almost believe it's a 70 year old song.
42. Extreme - More Than Words
Possibly THE most earnest love song ever, haha. That chorus is so pleasing to the ear. Plus, FALSETTO. Not a lot of falsetto going on back in the 90s. Also I love the video, with the other two members of the band sitting around reading magazines and holding up lighters, lol.
41. Ben Folds Five - Brick
This song always seemed so sad to me even though I never understood what it was about. It wasn't until much later, when I learned it was about abortion. Now it seems like the content of the song is pretty clear, but when I was a teenager I definitely didn't understand. It's a really beautiful song though.

Date: 2013-07-30 12:53 am (UTC)Especially the Sophie B. Hawkins song - another song that contributed to my lesbian awakening. When I listened to it and realized, like, OH. THIS IS ABOUT HAVING SEX WITH A WOMAN. I was hooked.
