Part III, the countdown continues!
Numbers 40 through 31...
40. Primitive Radio Gods - Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in my Hand
WHAT A TITLE. The beat of the song seems like it should be repetitive but it doesn't feel that way. BB King sample, soft singing, those do do dos. Just a really nice song to listen to. And he lyrics are so wonderful. Can money pay for all the days I lived awake but half asleep?
39. Oasis - Wonderwall
Holy crap this video has almost 79 million views on youtube. WELL THEN. lol. Everybody knows this song of course. It's SO iconic, but it's SO good. It pains me to say that because the Gallagher brothers annoy me (how many times has Oasis broken up? lol), but regardless of how I feel about them, this is just a really good song.
38. The Cranberries - Linger
I will never get over the Cranberries' lead singer's voice! So croony, alternately deep and high. I know a lot of people consider Zombie to be their best song, but Linger is just so moody and for some reason sticks with me more.
37. R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts
The saddest song to ever sad. It definitely made me cry more than once. And it also made me go out and buy ever R.E.M. album out there and they are a fairly flawless band so that was a good decision.
36. No Doubt - Just A Girl
Ahh, old school No Doubt. Tragic Kingdom is one of the defining albums of my youth. This song was one of my first introductions to the concept of girl power, and I identified with the song so hard, it took me by surprise. Plus, there's that ska sound again, and Gwen Stefani's voice is so amazingggggg. It was really hard to choose between this song and Spiderwebs (since I forced myself to choose only one song per artist) but I went with this one just cause of the emotional connection, but Spiderwebs is freaking amazing too.
35. Santana ft Rob Thomas - Smooth
I'd NEVER heard of Santana, I had no idea why this guy was famous enough to be the main artist on the song, but I knew that that guitar was amazing and I didn't even care about Rob Thomas' singing, I could just listen to the music for dayyyyssss.
34. Weezer - Buddy Holly
OOOH WEEE OOOH I LOOK JUST LIKE BUDDY HOLLy, OH OH AND YOU'RE MARY TYLER MOOREEEEEE. Literally the only Weezer song I like, lol. SO CATCHY. And the video was a marvel of its time, haha.
33. The Verve Pipe - The Freshmen
This song is a bit maudlin, but it holds a ~special meaning to me because it was huge the same year I was a freshman in high school, lol. IT FELT SO RELEVANT TO MY LIFE.
32. Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun
TIME FOR YOUR DOSE OF MINDFUCK. Every time this video came on mtv I just had to cease all activity and stare. EVERY TIME. It was so bizarre and creepy. Well it still is tbh. Those smiles. D: Nightmare fuel.
31. Sarah McLachlan - Hold On
Sarah McLachlan was HUGE in the 90s, of course. She had about 8 million amazing albums to choose from, but Fumbling Towards Ecstasy is one of those other defining albums of my youth. And every song on it is 8000% perfection. I could have picked one of the more well known songs like Possession, but Hold On defines 90s-era Sarah McLachlan to me. It might actually be my fave song of hers. SO SOULFUL.
