And the lord said.. let there be summer tv.

Defiance

Defiance is back!

I thought the season premiere was really good, to be honest. Tightly written and acted, prettily shot. There was a lot of story set-up this episode, but that's okay. It makes me feel a bit more secure and like they are planning on having a large, interesting storyarc throughout the season.

Will the occupation of Defiance be overthrown?! What's going on with Irisa?! Will Alak fight back against his mom or will Stahma gain complete control of the underground/criminal world?! Will Amanda figure out her new boss is a monster and what will she do when she finds out Kenya is dead?!

All questions that will surely (hopefully?) be answered this season!

Last season I think the show suffered a bit because it couldn't decide if it wanted to be the slightly cheesy, feel-good type of science fiction, or the darker, more serial, more complex kind of scifi. I got whiplash going back and forth between the two styles. Judging based on this ONE episode, it seems they have chosen on the darker, edgier scifi. I don't really care which they pick, they just gotta pick ONE and stick with it. So here's hoping next week the tone doesn't change drastically!

Favorite part of the episode: Irisa's new outfit. NO MORE MIDRIFF. Crossing my fingers it stays that way. (I really kind of loathed the ~~vaguely tribal midriff-baring~~ style of look she had last season, haha.)

Second favorite part: Irisa and Nolan getting back together. YAY FATHERS AND DAUGHTERS! <3 I liked the homage they had to the series premiere with the singing in the car. That was nice. :D

Third favorite part: Ugh I love how they shoot this show, there were so many shots where I was like I MUST ICON THIS. Yesssss.

Dominion, that new angel show that premiered last night on SyFy

So the plot of this show is more or less the same concept as the book series Penryn & The End of Days, only with some bland Matt Damon-looking dude as the main character instead of a teen girl. (I know little about religious mythology, I'm guessing both works are based on some sort of Bible story or mythology about angels warring on Earth? Angels seem to be massive dicks, man. MASSIVE DICKS.)

Anyway I do really love the concept of the dystopia, half-ruined Earth, and angels using the planet and humanity as a battleground. The episode itself was pretty well-written, well-acted, I enjoyed the story a lot.

There could be more ladies. There are a handful (I like Claire, and I like the little girl, I forget her name, and there's the lady committee member who is sleeping with Michael but I didn't get much of a sense of a personality from her yet..) but the super main characters are dudes and that's less exciting to me, haha.

The guy they cast to play Michael is perfect. He has a very distinct look and it's kind of alluring but weird at the same time.

Anthony Stewart Head is in it with AN AMERICAN ACCENT and it is a crime against humanity. His accent is pretty good - he over enunciates his r's, which Brits tend to do when doing American accents - but other than that, if I didn't know he wasn't American, I might not have picked up on it immediately. So, he gets an A on the effort. However it sounds so fucking bizarre to hear that weird voice coming out of him. It honestly took me out of every scene with him. I don't know why you would bother casting ASH just to make him talk in an American accent. SIGH.

So tl;dr I do plan on tuning in against next week. The premiere told a good story, and that's 98% of why I am tuning back in. The other 2% is weirdly alluring Michael. None of the other characters made much of an impression on me. I'm not sure if I really recommend it or anything, but it certainly wasn't bad.

Falling Skies, which doesn't premiere on tv for 2 more days, but you can watch free streaming on Amazon.com right now.

Yay Falling Skies! This show never really seems to go anywhere plot-wise, but it's a pretty reliable source of grungy post-apocalypse setting porn, which I love. Scrappiness, dirtiness, struggling to survive, fighting aliens. Good stuff.

The plot with Lexi is getting a little weird, but I can't be too mad because I wasn't looking forward to them toting around a baby/little kid so I guess I'd rather have this weird accelerated aging mystical alien story.

Tom writing the Gettysburg Address on the wall of his cell was great. I love when he gets all history nerd. MY MAN. *FIST BUMP* It's so super dorky and I love it. HE IS FUELED BY THE POWER OF AMERICAN HISTORY AND THE CONSTITUTION, LOL. I liked how he is this vigilante figure biking through the compound, inspiring Banksy-style graffiti and pissing the aliens off. Oh it's so dorky, I love everything about Tom Mason, honestly.

I'm interested in the Hitler-youth-esque re-education camps they got going on with the kids, and what's gonna happen there. Is Matt really their pawn, or is he faking in order to stage his own rebellion? And why are the aliens doing this, anyway? I only partially care though, because again, I'm not really watching Falling Skies for the amazing plot, lol.

We didn't get to stay much with any one character since there was a lot of catching up and foundation-laying going on. But I was glad to see Maggie and Anne and Ben and Deni and Pope and also Tector, played by Ryan Robbins, who is in all my tv this season and he's getting really hot, so.. I'm good with this.

All in all, solid season premiere for Falling Skies.

OMG. Datak. So gross. Who does that?

I need a new summer show icon challenge so I have an excuse to make new Defiance icons. But not until I finish some of these fic exchanges. :D

Such a promising beginning for Defiance! I loved the scene where Nolan and Irisa were reunited. And poor Amanda, looking for her sister.

Now if they can just keep it up.

I'm glad to hear Dominion has a few female characters. Will definitely watch soon.

Falling Skies was really weird to me.

a) not a fan of random time jumps
b) REALLY not a fan of mystically aging creepy children with "special" powers :|
c) ugh, hitler-esque youth re-education, pretty sure this has more to do with "my" history, but I'm sick and tired of seeing hitler stuff in shows/movies.

so, yeah, I'm unimpressed by FS, but of course I'll keep watching, to see where they're going.

I actually really liked Dominion, I didn't know what to expect, but the story was intriguing, and even though most of the younger actors are unknowns, no one felt weird/out of place to me. So there's that.

and I'm unsure about Defiance, too.

gosh i love arrows.

also watching tv, making icons, writing fic, reading comics, and generally fanning it up.
