fannish 50 - #2 - favorite soundtracks
Mar. 14th, 2023 02:09 pmAnother entry for my Fannish Fifty challenge, in which I am talking all things video game. For this entry, I'm going to highlight some of my favorite VG soundtracks. I'm definitely biased as most of my favorite soundtracks are for games that I have a deep emotional connection to, so I'm sure that's not an accident.
Minecraft
The Minecraft soundtrack is melancholic and nostalgic feeling, almost ambient. Minecraft can be cozy and calm or anxiety-filled. It all depends on how you play it. Mostly, I just like to mine and craft, and not worry about bad guys, and I love the calm and peaceful, but slightly sad, music. It just makes me feel like the Minecraft world is an apocalyptic land, Earth in the far flung future, with most of humanity destroyed.
Subwoofer Lullaby
Living Mice
No Man's Sky
This soundtrack was created by 65daysofstatic which is a band I love, and this soundtrack is probably actually one of their most impressive creations. Again, the music is moody and atmospheric, but also frenetic and noisy, and the subtitle of "Music for an Infinite Universe" feels so fitting. I feel like I am a lone explorer flying through space when I listen to this.
Asimov
End of the World Sun
Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk had a devastating story, which makes sense when the two main characters are the one who knows she's slowly dying and the dead ghost stuck in her head that's killing her. Not a lot of room for optimism or hope (though those make their appearances). The story takes you some dark places, and since we're in a dystopic world, the music encapsulates that vibe. A lot of the music is loud and wild and accentuates the action scenes in the game, though my favorite tracks are the slower, moodier ones from the biggest emotional moments of the game, when V forges meaningful relationships with the people around her.
Outsider No More
Been Good to Know Ya
Dear Esther
Once more, melancholic and moody. Dear Esther is a game frequently mocked as a "walking simulator" but I love those types of games. A completely immersive storytelling experience, no worries about inventory management or strategy or weapons. Simply, following the story from point A to point B to point C, to absorb the meaning of what the story is trying to get across. Dear Esther is my favorite game of this style and the soundtrack that goes with it is haunting and beautiful.
I Have Begun My Ascent
This Godforsaken Aerial
Mass Effect (specifically, ME 3)
Each of the 3 games in this trilogy have a slightly different style of musical soundtrack, though there are threads that bind them all together. The 3rd game's soundtrack is the most meaningful to me, as it imparts every ounce of emotion it can into the soundtrack for the culmination of the epic story from over 3 games. Most of the songs bring me immediately to their corresponding scenes, many of which were really heartwrenching.
